Presentation Skills
Paper Presentation Vs Seminar
A very thin wall separates the two:-
Some of the points below may contradict your opinion......
Paper Presentation
This is more like a talk on current topics issues, in a way you can say that papers are first reviewed and the selected. Paper presentation includes formatting stuff also & it's a PAPER + a Presentation.
Seminar
This is more like a go onn & speak. The difference is mainly in time to discuss that particular topic. Seminar might include report or maybe not. Sometimes you are asked in companies to go onn & speak about the project, that time you are giving a seminar & not a paper presentation.
Presentation is just a way for visual representation of the same thing just inorder that the client or public could understand it better !
So, to conclude
Usually internationally you have "CALL FOR PAPERS" that is your thought on that particular topic & then as i told you presentation is just a medium & you can go onn & give a seminar on the same topic !
Some Presentation Skills
Now for some general presentations tips which can be quite handy. simple, but effective stuff.
1) While giving a presentaion, don't station yourself in one location, cuz if you do so, the audience has to look in one direction alone and lose intrest faster. Instead if you move (dont jog around though) the audience eye moves along with you, by this you can know how many of them are actually listening and then accordingly apply other tricks to gain maximum attention.
2) The attitude which you keep while giving a presentation is very important. Always give presentations as if you are there to entertain the audience, like the movies. U need have to convey your message AND entertain them. So, how exactly to keep your audience entertained?
i) Use humour in ur speech
ii) Involve ur audience in the speech, in form of Qs, quizzes, use them to illustrate examples. you can even add the prize factor, like if anyone answers the Q, they get a prize. the prize can be a Rs.5 chocolate, but it can do wonders for your presentation.
iii) USe intresting ppts so that people will atleast look at the screen (i'll take ppts in detail later though). if you have to use transperencies, never hand-write them, alays print on your transperencies. even there, use cartoons and humour as much as possible. Dont add too much text.
3) Use as many case-studies and examples as possible to illustrate your point. Even the selection of case-studies makes a difference. Take interesting ones which the audience can relate to, or atleast find amusing. like, a KFC, BMW or a Kingfisher case-study sounds interesting, but a Kangaroo or camel one sounds boring. However i dont mean to rule out the rest. If you have good matter, then anything can work. Avoid using direct statements from your referance material, like a deifation from a text book, or even while using a case-study, understand it yourself and say it like a story more than a case. This approach makes the whole thing more real. You can also begin with "Once upon a time..."
4) Dont be afraid to try something new. even if its unconventional and no one has tried it before. Keep your audience in view, if you think they might like a change, then go for it.
5) Now a lot of people dont have a strong vocab and are not very comfortable in english. Well, believe me you can still give excellent presentaions. If you dont know big words, dont use them! as simple as that. infact, somtimes even the audience cant understand difficult words, so u'd be doing them aq favour by talking in simple english. Its just that whatever you say, even simple english, has to be correct.
Now, 2nd problem is, bcuz ur eng isnt that strong, u get more nervous on stage. well, so before your presentation, get your speech checked for any grammatical mistakes by someone - a classmate maybe or even me (mail it to me) and then practice it hard for a day, understand what you are going to say and then u will automatically remember it on the P-Day (presentaion day).
The other problem is "What if i forget?" issue. well, i would recommend u to present without paper-reading, but incase you forget..
i) Cue cards - you can keep Cue cards. it is like a small piece of paper about 2x3in. Jot down the imp points of your speech so even if you forget, you dont have to open up a huge 2 sheet paper and fumble around on stage.
ii) HIghlight - if you arent comfortabe with cue cards,
then you can carry your original speech but highlight the imporatnt
points with a marker so ur eye cathes that immediately on stage, and if your speech is in a double sheet of paper, always tear it apart, makes it easier to refer on stage.
5) The start of your speech is very important. This is where the audience's attention is the maximum. Your start can decide wethere the attention is going to be retained or not. So, take up a story, a nice quote, Q the audience anything that can amuse.
6) Develop your own style. Everyone has a uniue style of presenting. some presenters keep a stone-face, some go like the rajdhani, some have a weird accent, some have a very laid out approach. You can notice these styles even in your own class. Develop your own approach and style so that people can relate to it.
Well, these are some basic things. Try em out yourself and let us know if they worked out....
Paper Presentation Vs Powerpoint Presentation
More than a paper presentation, we could make it something more general like a powerpoint presentation. Where they can pick any topic the want to (or maybe among topics we give them) and make a presentation on the latest research going on in the field and all that
Paper presentation is way of presting things on most of time OHP sheet papers to present any information. There is some diadvatages those make not perfect paper presentation.
There is no graphics.
Unabale display of figures & graphs.
We unable to add the sound/audio behind each paper presentation.
We unable to give information in more systematic way.
Some time there is a chance that time we unable teach & convincing without Images.
But its a one of the old way of presting the things. Now days computer and Powerpoint Presentations given new excellent way of respresnting the things
Using of the Powerpoint Presentation
Save the time

Worst Blunder In Presentation
I can just think of this one incident which happened in the HR class of MMS....& i heard abt it from my HR friends..
One of the professors (really don't remember his name) asked one group to give some HR presentation on his own Business...
My great classmates started the ppt with a song....guess which one...?? give up...well they started with the song
"Sab Ganda hai, par dhanda hai ye" - Company movie !!
As exepcted the prof got really angry & gave this big lecture abt how he respects his business...& so on !
Blunder.all the way .!from content to delivery !
The presentation was of miss Rama Iyer in fybms of business environment.
Fybms--beeing the first of kind to get introduced to presentations,we used to prepare word to word to deliver.
My group was THOROUGHLY prepared for all the wrong reasons for this because we simply lacked in content!& our "content" would not even make the presentation last for 10 minutes.1st-some one started it..hardly2minutes over&he is off the dias.
2nd-second to go and his stage appearence literally finishes as soon as he arrives - he read a few lines - Happy realisation , must say as we realise his content was just too short!:) lasted 30 seconds leaving all of us worried/even as mam was left thinking because she never understood it properly.
4th- harldy 5 minutes up..after i finish my part&as the process continued i told the last guy to stay on dias for sometime.Probably JUST stretch ur matter and do whatever u want to stretch the time!!!..& he DID succeed in a way -He spoke his matter very very slow making it obvious to each and every individual present in the class that we are trying to fill in time & unexpectedly starts "LAUGHING" OR RATHER GIGGLING for no ryme or reason to cover up for the time while the mam is left wondering - why is he laughing!!!for even she doesnt realise ! we were covering up for the time!.:)!
